Head to the 1,140-acre Paintsville Lake State Park to take advantage of its opportunities for water sports, such as swimming, boating, fishing, and water skiing. If you want to make a camping trip out of your adventure, the Daniel Boone National Forest is a short trip east and the Appalachian foothills are found everywhere, creating a picturesque backdrop for our beautiful town.
2. The Kentucky Apple Festival
The Kentucky Apple Festival is the perfect example of the spirit of our town’s community. For over 50 years, this festival has brought people from all over the state and beyond to the streets of downtown Paintsville for a celebration. You never know what you’ll find at the festival, but you can rest assured there will be more sweets than you can handle. Crafters from across America display and sell their arts in this weekend-long celebration. If you’ve never attended the Kentucky Apple Festival, be sure to make your way to it every October.
3. Explore Country Music
Paintsville’s claim to fame when it comes to celebrities is being country music star Loretta Lynn’s hometown. To show their pride, the people of Paintsville have given country music fans a couple of places to explore to get an insightful view of the genre’s history.
Start your exploration by visiting Loretta Lynn’s birthplace in Butcher Holler. This coal miner’s home nestled between two mountains was where the singer grew up along with her sister, another nationally recognized country music star by the name of Crystal Gayle.
From there, make your way to the U.S. 23 Country Music Highway Museum. Here, you’ll find 14 exhibits, each dedicated to a country music star who came from Eastern Kentucky, including Tom T. Hall, Billy Ray Cyrus, Dwight Yoakam, and more.
4. Fishing and Boating
Anglers in the Paintsville area have their work cut out for them. The town is nestled between two lakes and built along the Levisa Fork. You’ll find great bass, crappie, and walleye fishing in Paintsville Lake. Over in nearby Dewey Lake, there are bass, crappie, muskellunge, and catfish to be caught. If you’re a fan of the peace and relaxation that comes with fishing, the Paintsville area is perfect for you.
The lakes are also hot spots for those who want to get out in the water on boats or go swimming. On a hot day, Paintsville heads to the lake.
