Fortunately, there are a number of campgrounds around Paintsville, Kentucky, that offer stunning beauty, comfort, and activities alongside a wonderful place to rest your head at the end of a busy day of exploring.
1. Twin Knobs Campground
Nestled along the banks of Cave Run Lake in the Daniel Boone National Forest near Morehead, Kentucky, the Twin Knobs Campground offers more than 200 camping sites spread over 10 loops throughout the campground.
Campsites can accommodate RVs, and some are equipped with electricity to power cooking equipment, lights, or other camping necessities. Bathhouses are equipped with showers, drinking water, and flush toilets for a little dose of creature comforts while you’re exploring the wilderness.
You may have a hard time finding enough hours in the day to take advantage of all of the amenities near the Twin Knobs Campground. The campground has volleyball courts, basketball hoops, and horseshoe pits, as well as a boat launch and beach. The lake itself welcomes fishing, swimming, and water sports like skiing, windsurfing, and sailing.
2. Hillbilly Heaven Campground
Located just over the state line in Delbarton, West Virginia, the Hillbilly Heaven Campground is a family-owned compound offering log cabins, cottages, and RV and tent camping spots with electrical hookups, Wi-Fi, and access to the bathhouse. Hillbilly Heaven offers easy access to the Hatfield McCoy Trails, over 800 miles of trails open to off-road vehicles.
The cabins at Hillbilly Heaven are simple yet immaculately maintained with wooden interiors and furniture and amenities, including a bathroom, small kitchenette, and even a Smart TV to keep you connected to the world beyond this beautiful backyard.
3. Koomer Ridge Campground
Located in the Red River Gorge area of the Daniel Boone National Forest, the Koomer Ridge Campground offers a great location with easy access to a number of hiking trails, including the Koomer Ridge Trail, Silvermine Arch Trail, and the Hidden Arch Trail. The campground amphitheater opens Memorial Day weekend each year and features programming each weekend through Labor Day.
The campground includes 54 sites for tent camping and 19 sites suitable for an RV or trailer parking. The campground is open year-round, although flush toilets and showers are not available during the colder winter months.
4. Paintsville Lake Park
Paintsville Lake Park is an ideal destination for a local outdoor adventure with options to please everyone. Enjoy fishing and boating in the lake, where pontoons, fishing boats, and houseboats are available for rent at the nearby marina. If you’re looking for a challenge, check out the 18-mile Dawkins Line Rail Trail, which can be traversed by foot, bicycle, or horseback.
End your day of adventuring at one of 32 developed campsites that offer amenities such as restrooms, showers, and laundry in addition to playgrounds for the little ones and other recreation opportunities. If you prefer a more primitive walk-in camping experience, 10 sites are available that offer a more rustic experience.
